Recap on 2013

So, here we are days away from 2014!  BUT today is a very special day so I'm going to give a huge "SHOUT OUT" to my little sister Lynn ~ Happy Birthday!!

2013 has been an incredibly exciting and busy year.  WOWA!! ~ It all started with the preparations for a move to North Carolina.  The plan was to start a satellite office on Camp Lejeune at the newly constructed fitness facility ~ WALLACE CREEK.  that was the beginning.

Well that move didn't go as expected but it did offer opportunities of expanding the USMT brand and it's concept & theory along with educating fellow massage therapists on what we do & how we do it.

February brought the Blizzard of 2013 to New England (RI) .. I, on the other hand was enjoying the calmer weather of NC and focused on my training for the up-coming athletic season.  Swim.. Bike & Run!  ~ those are my new fun activities and what better "play ground" to train than with a bunch of motivated Marines?  We got it all here.  Safe roads & trails to ride on and the base pool & running paths are an excellent tool as well.

As exciting as my training was... I was still lonely for my family & team mates...the new fitness facility was still not open with no clear date in site for that Grand Opening.  After 8+ weeks of no massage.. I decided to head back to RI and the RI USMT office.  I had to get back to work... the rest was nice but I was really  missing my work and the clients & athletes who have come to rely on me.  YES, it was a difficult decision to leave them in the first place.  When I got back , it was busier than before I left and it stayed that way and actually got busier than expected and needed to start looking to hire a few more massage therapists.  (This processes is actually harder than you think)

Late March , April & May found all of us at the RI USMT office busy as little beavers getting our athletes ready for the up-coming athletic season.. our marathon athletes and the beginning of our Sports Massage Event Schedule... yes.. yes.. we have one of those.

Our first big stop on the event calendar was the Wounded Warrior Games! This was our 3rd year providing sports massage at this incredible event which takes place out at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center &  Air Force Academy.  Great week providing that much needed
spectacular sports massage service to this deserving group of military athletes.

Kristen & I traveled to NC on two (2) separate occasions to help the NC AMTA develop their own SPORTS MASSAGE TEAM and prepare them for their first big event... Raleigh 70.3 Ironman Triathlon.  This was a lot of fun providing a training to very talented massage therapists... you know the kind that want to learn new things and who are willing to "let go" of old -antiquated information and bad habits they have carried with them from school... that's a tough one, can you imagine how hard that is?

It's also difficult to get someone to "buy into" a new concept that is virtually non -existent in the massage field... that's why the USMT is extremely successful.. we are "trail blazers" and have learned from the BEST! ( Thank you Peter, Celeste & Karen ~ we appreciate you!)  However, those that wanted to succeed are still with us!  :o)  Educating the sports massage therapist's in our profession 1 day at a time.

As much excitement as I have had up to this point it's clearly not over.. not even by a long shot.

JUNE found me out in California with my athlete Demetrius Andrade AKA ~ "Boo Boo" who is a professional boxer.  I 've been with this kid ( I say kid because he is like my second son) since 2008 where we met at the Beijing Olympics.  :o)  we have been together ever since.  My job was to "tune him up" & keep him injury free.  That's always my job and I gotta say I really enjoy it ~ sometimes more than you know.  Yes, there is a devilish grin right there and that chuckle too.

JULY found me, Gunny, Kristen & her son Jon on vacation ... on the beach!  1 week on the beach of just pure relaxation... with some "training"~ running, biking and swimming.  However, we know a FEW Marines that were "busted up" so we set up a "make shift" sports massage tent to help them out.  The funny thing is we were camping in tents on the beach... so needless to say everyone & his brother where coming through the woodwork to see about getting a free massage... sorry but there is no free massage here!  It's  always funny (not) when people find out that you are a massage therapist and all of a sudden they are grabbing their backs and saying something cliché about getting a massage... So then make an appointment, pay for it and get one! UUHHHGGG!

The end of July found all of us at the USMT office competing in the open water "Crabman Sprint Tri"... it's also where I injured but fixed my long standing leg injury... don't ask, its a long story... however there was a "silver lining" to this calamity... sorry but I can't help but laugh.

Because of this Kristen & I wouldn't be participating in our first 1/2 marathon... next year!

August was busy , very busy but it was also my dad's 70th birthday so my sisters & brother's decided to have a party for him... wowa what fun!!

So, needless to say September was a blur and October was jam packed with events and activities and the actual move to NC and the opening of the new USMT office on Camp Lejeune at Wallace Creek!
October found me in:
Lake Placid NY for the Team Trials of Bobsled, Skeleton & Luge
Camp Lejeune NC
Marine Corps Marathon, Washington DC

November was a blur as well... I did a lot of DRIVING all over the place.
I also went out to Corpus Christi TX for Boo Boo's World Championship Fight, what a great trip and yes it's awesome to be ring side for your fighters fight and the ultimate outcome! WORLD CHAMPION!!

USMT - Providence RI Office

Providence RI.. Home of the Ultimate Sports Massage facility.  This is where hopes and dreams are achieved.  It is also a place where relaxation & pampering can be provided.  We have it all... When you first visit, I think there is a mixed set of emotions and expectations from all who visit.. It depends on what your needs are.

When I first started developing the USMT Providence office... I knew what I wanted and it was NOT a wellness center.  It was going to be different ... I was no longer under the "thumb" of someone else's vision or their restrictions.  It was my time and I was ready to go.

I wanted athletes who walked in for the first time to immediately feel like they were entering a sports medicine atmosphere and know they would be taken care of in that manner.

I feel like I have accomplished that.

I wanted a sports massage facility that could handle the demands of athletes and others who needed this specialized form of massage... This specialty that separates us from the rest.. And the key ingredient is and always will be the RESULTS we provide.

For clients who are not coming in for sports or performance massage work.. Well, your oasis is when you enter anyone of the private massage rooms.. Comfy & cozy!  I know that my big TRANSFORMERS picture is overwhelming.. & one must think... HELLO KITTY... What does that have to do with massage??  Well, it's our personalities and it's what we bring to the " table".. :)

The services we provide at the USMT Providence office:

• Sports -injury massage
    • Kinesio Taping
    • IASTM (instrument assisted soft
       tissue mobilization
    • Ice Massage
• Relaxation - Therapeutic Massage
• Deep Tissue massage
• Thai yoga massage
• Hot Stone massage
• Spa Treatment massage

One thing to remember, we love our job and excel at providing top notch services.. Hands down!

There is a wealth of knowledge and skill within each and everyone of the very talented massage therapists at USMT.

So, please take the opportunity to contact the office and see first hand what we have to offer... You won't be disappointed !

On the Road Again....

I know it's been a while since I last up dated the site... I apologize, but it has been busy!  ~ lots of excitement, changes and challenges.... But nothing me & my spectacular crew can't handle.

Two (2) huge changes that have occurred in the office are: 1. The Gunny has taken over as the general manager and Alex will be the evening supervisor. Kristen, Valen , Kaela & Holly are my outstanding massage crew!

2. I am away currently and will return to the RI USMT office at the end of October to work & visit before heading back to Jacksonville NC Camp LeJuene to start working in the USMT satellite office at Wallace Creek Fitness Center.

This project has taken over a year to come to fruition ... But it's finally here and I'm not passing this opportunity up.

I know that the RI office is in good hands~ I have every confidence of that!

Good things are in the making... No stopping us now!

I know it's a little late.. but I just got the photo's back and wanted to post them... This is what my family did on the 4th of July.. We participated in a 5.5 mile annual road race to help raise funds for the town my sister lives in.  It's a great course with lots of community support all the way.  We even had a 1st place finisher in his age group.. 4th over all!  It was a lot of fun and look forward to doing it again next year.

So far this summer we have competed in a few road races and sprint triathlons.. we have at least 3 additional events coming up in the fall ~ possibly more!

Stay active... stay healthy... stay injury free... but, if you need muscular maintenance... you know who to call!

Yes, We Use Tools...

Yesterday found a few new clients in the office ... Referrals are the best!!  The client I had was referred by 2 separate people who had mentioned I use "tools" to scrape the muscles during a massage.

This is always interesting because with athletes ( most anyway) they understand what this is.  Instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation... That's what it is in a nut shell... But there is a clear methodology behind it and it should not be facilitated without proper training and understanding.

I practiced, researched and experimented with this modality for over a year & a half before ever bringing it to the office and implementing it on a client.

This is a serious approach to muscular treatment & recovery and should not be entered into lightly by a practicing therapist... OWN this information, that should be the overall obligation & commitment to each person that is treated with this approach.

But to get back to this new client.. She said when she heard we use tools, her instant response was ... I need to get there- What's the number!!

It's always interesting what the response is from clients about the tools... The tools are miraculous ~ and the difference between continued depression for a client / athlete or the road to recovery and hope.

It's difficult seeing clients come to the office on a daily basis who are at their wits end because they are desperate for pain relief and want to recover from muscular dysfunction and no one seems to know how to help.  It can be a viscous cycle with no end in site... But with the right combination of therapist, knowledge & skill along with the ability to use various modality's and tools... There's a winning combination for a success story!

Yesterday was the start of a new success story.  There is a lot that goes into the overall treatment when using the tools and communication is one aspect of it as well.

If you have questions regarding this approach, feel free to contact me at the office or send an email my way.. I'd be happy to speak with you...

For those of you who know me... I love my work!!

Motivating Vacation!

Today I head back to RI and the USMT office.  This is not a bad thing, but does mark the beginning of the end of my vacation.  Yes, I have traveled ALOT this year ( and its not even close to being over) but this was a true vacation.  Just relaxing and focusing on my continued training leading up to my next Sprint Triathlon.

It was nice not worrying about the usual office stuff... Don't get me wrong, the USMT office and what it represents is my world- my life.   But there does come a point where you have to put it aside and make that time for yourself... You gotta recharge and get that MOJO back.  I'm not saying I lost it, but I felt like I needed to get recharged!  It's really no different than when an athlete feels the "burnout". Once we feel it, we have choices.. Ignore it or do something about it.

I choose to do something about it!

Where I chose to take my vacation always has mixed views.  I love being on the beach on Camp LeJeune.. Land of the MARINES!   Private, exciting and has all of the things I need for training and keeps me happy!  What else could you ask for??   This place can really dial you in on motivation, determination and the can do attitude!

When you have that " can do attitude" and motivation to get something done its simply amazing to see awesomeness unfold.. And this can be anything that is important to you in your world!

I want to see big changes occur in my office and for that to happen it all starts with me!

While I was enjoying the beach, whether it was walking or swimming in the water, looking for sharks teeth or being a sun goddess (NOT)... I was thinking.. How can I make the change? How can I motivate my Team? How can I become the positive change they need?  I have not come up with all of the answers or ideas to facilitate this process but I will implement one new thing a week and follow through until everyone is on board and we are all on the same page in the same play book moving forward.  The USMT team will work together as a fine tuned, well oiled machine.  That will be my obligation to the massage therapist's that work for me and will always be the commitment we offer our athletes and clients!

Things you can expect:

• A plan
• Educated & knowledgable staff
• Goal orientated performance based
   outcomes
•  Results from sports massage
    treatments
• Ability to use various modalities to treat muscular injury - soft tissue dysfunctions

This is important to me- I want the athletes and clients who visit us to know they will be working with a dedicated group of sports massage therapists who have their best interests at hand.

There is a reason you come to us and I am well aware that there are plenty of choices for massage therapy out there.. BUT there is only one USMT and I plan on keeping it that way.

I pride myself on top notch, second to none sports massage with proven results.  This is the # 1 commitment to you!

So, for my TEAM MATES reading this I'm personally challenging you to "raise your bar"... Because I intend to do just that!

Tighten up your belts and tie your laces up tight... I just ratcheted up the intensity people!  ( you'll thank me later)

Always with the Glitter!

Just Simply MASSAGE

Yesterday I was amazed at the response I received personally along with feedback and appreciation of my fellow USMT teammates on how WE positively impact our clients lives with our special brand of MASSAGE.

I personally provide an eclectic brand of sports injury muscular therapy... WOW.. Yes I'm aware that's a mouthful there.. But what other way can I explain it?

I pride myself on providing results based on goal orientated performance based outcomes.  I listen when you come in and explain to me what's going on... But I can guarantee you my mind is racing!

Yesterday... Was an incredible day in the office on all levels ... Thanks to everyone, but this stuck with me all day ~
" Lori-Ann, I'm so glad I referred my friend to you... She is so happy.. You have no idea how positively you have impacted her life"

This is why I do what I do!  I don't need to hear that everyday, but when I do hear it.. It feels nice & I definitely listen!

It's amazing how much power we really have when we master the gifts that are given to us... Mine is massage and I'm glad it found me!!

Oh it's going to be a Glittery Day!!

Sports Massage @ A Sports Camp

WOW!!  What an incredible week it's been, of course it's had it's ups & downs but extremely exciting!  ~ no doubt about it!!
I've been in California for the week at a Professional Boxing Camp with my Pro fighter (Demetrius Andrade, A.K.A. "Boo Boo" -Boxing) and members of his team along with various pro boxers from around the country who are out here training for their own up coming fights.

So far a typical training day consists of a run or strength & conditioning session. Then evaluating to see if any muscular therapy or stretching is needed prior to the night time training which usually consisted of either pad work or sparring in the ring... Either way.. These boys put it all out there.  Afterwards, we head back to the house for a 1 hour hot tub / cold plunge ( in the pool) contrast.  Then this would be followed up with a sports massage flush.. Working out the kinks.  Addressing the muscular needs for that particular day & training.

On a few occasions ice massage was utilized.. Mostly on the larger muscle groups... The legs! (hammie's, quads & adductors)... Making sure everything is addressed, separated and working synergistically with each other... Gotta have that balance.

It's been very interesting to see this side of my fighters training, I'm usually not involved with it... Just his recovery piece. I'm glad I was able to watch & witness the activities he takes on through out this whole process, it gives me more in-sight and understanding of what his complaints are when he comes in for treatments now.

It was also exciting to share my special brand of muscular therapy sports massage to the other fighters in the camp as well.. All of them were amazed, they had never experienced anything like it before.. As the Gunny says.. I'm the "secret weapon"! :)

I head back to RI tonight on a "red eye", its been an incredible week, but I miss my team mates, my office and my athletes & clients!  Every once in a while ya gotta change it up... This was a great shot in the arm~ but its time to get back to the real deal... USMT!

Oh... You better believe the glitter was with me~ all week!

I'm out~. Lori -Ann

Warrior Games Day 3

Today started off as we say in Rhode Island as a "schorcha"... HOT!! .. But we were ready to go!  So as our days have started off.. Breakfast .. COFFEE and the drive to the OTC for a few morning athlete sessions then over to the Air Force Academy for the track & field events.

It's always a struggle when organizers " drop the ball"... But in USMT fashion we did overcome, adapt and resolve the obstacles in our way and improvised along the way as well.   Bottom line... We came to work and we are not going to be deterred!  NOPE , not us!

We set up shop by commandeering a tent, moved a few tables & chairs and before you knew it .. We were up and running.  We only had one massage table so we improvised and borrowed a yoga mat from the British Forces and BAM...two massage stations going.. I paid attention to the body mechanics as well, didn't feel like hurting my back because of poor posture ... I was in the groove!

Karen & Kristen worked fabulously as well... The athletes were so appreciative that we were set up track side to help them throughout the competitions.  We were elbows & arms in this game... THEN... The pressure was on... It started to rain!  We continued to work until we were officially told we had to leave the site for safety reasons.

What a great group of athletes!!

We're out for the rest of the day but will be back at it tomorrow.. You can count on it!!

Always and yes the Glitter is with us!

Warrior Games Day 2

Today was our first full day working at the Warrior Games.  The excitement here is pretty incredible.. Love these games and love these athletes!

We were all able to catch some of the pistol & rifle shooting competition  along with a few matches of sitting volley ball.. The volley ball takes place right out side of our office.... It can get loud & crazy.. But it's all good fun.

The Semper Fi Fund's volunteers visited us throughout the day as well.. It's always nice to see members of our Team charity.

Between the three of us ( Kristen, Karen & myself) we treated approximately 30 athletes today.. It was a good day.

Tomorrow we are going to be set up track side at the Air Force Academy during the day and then back to the OTC at night to see a few more athletes there.

I can't describe the injuries... There are a lot of them .. But we are seeing the same muscular issues with them as we do with abled bodied athletes.  They know we have there best interest at hand and its about performance ... We give them that winning edge!

Tomorrow will be another great day at the office!!

Always & with the Glitter!!

Working out in Colorado Springs

Yesterday Kristen & I went for a run .. We plotted out a course that we eventually came upon a really nice trail that rambled along a small river basin.  We didn't run fast.. Just getting the jitters and "cob webs" out while waiting to pick our team mate Karen up from the airport.  We managed to get in aprox 4.41 miles with that outing.

Today we all went out for the same run.. Karen clearly has a set of wheels on her.. She's fast!  We also didn't see any snakes on the path today.. Yesterday was a different story.. Lol

Today's run was better and we improved our time.. Crazy.. Even with Kristen's double blisters.  It was really great out there, it's always nice to be able to stretch your legs and exercise on trips.

We are heading to the CSOTC in alittle while to get set up.... I'm really excited for our work to start!  We will keep u posted.

Always.. & yes the Glitter is with us!
